HabitRPG, Gamification, and the Pressure of the First Step

So, one of our PartPlay projects was to blog about our experiences with gamification. Some worked on Link games, I decided to try and gamify my life. I already had an unused HabitRPG account, so it was super serendipitous. SO I downloaded the app to my phone, and I put it on my main screen, so it couldn’t escape my glance. And it sat there. And it sat there. At some point it moved on from ‘I forgot’ to ‘Willful avoidance’, which is a scary thing to realize. I guess I may have some issues with getting things started, and keeping them started. I just have this fear of committing, of closing off avenues and sealing away possibilities.

If I were at Frost’s “The Road Not Taken”, I’d probably still be at that fork in the woods, paralyzed by my indecision. To summarize, my HabitRPG experiment was a failure, when viewed through the lens of “Could I gamify my life?”. But, the introspection during this period, heck, while writing this post, has been invaluable. I need to get off my butt, and actually do stuff. The first step of a journey is the hardest, and seeing as this is my first heartfelt blog post, I can cross “write your blog” off my List O’ First Steps. To my fellow classmates, how do y’all motivate yourselves to get started on big projects? Post and chatter in the comment section 🙂
